got underway in Melbourne today as the R30 took to
the streets of Albert Park fitted with the latest
technical updates. The good news was that the
performance of the new parts lived up to the
expectations of our designers back in Enstone who
have an aggressive development plan for the rest of
the year. The eagle-eyed among you will have spotted
an improvement to the front wing as well as extra
wing on the rear of the car.So after three hours of
free practice, which was unfortunately interrupted
by rain showers, our Chief Engineer, Alan Permane,
was rather optimistic on the Team’s chance for the
rest of the weekend:“Albert Park is a circuit that
is not used very often, and so the track was very
dirty at the start of the session, but it quickly
improved during P1 and the lap times fell
rapidly,” he said at the end of the day. “The
second session was affected by the rain, which will
have slowed down the evolution of the track for the
rest of the weekend.”Most teams, including us,
used the day to work on tyre evaluation. “We’ve
not been able to assess both compounds as much as we
would have liked because of the rain. We ran on the
prime in the morning and were happy with its
performance,” continued Alan. “But we didn’t
manage a comparison in the afternoon. However, we
did run one car on option and one on prime so we can
look at that data. As yet we haven’t seen any
clear trends.”The good news is that the R30 looked
well balanced out on the track today. There is still
a lot of work to do, but the pace of the car seems
encouraging. “It’s true that we had a little bit
too much understeer today,” admitted Alan, “the
car is quite stable at the rear, but we need to work
on the front end. Both drivers are reasonably happy
and the new parts are performing as expected. The
track is bumpy, but the car is working well on the
bumps so there are no major complaints from
us.”Because of the rains storms during the second
session, and because it’s Vitaly’s first visit
to Albert Park, the drivers worked on different
programmes today. “For Vitaly it was a new circuit
so he ran earlier in the first session with Robert
running a bit later,” explained Alan. “Our
approach this afternoon was affected by the rain,
but we ran as much as we could, especially with
Vitaly. With Robert we ran into the dry on
intermediate tyres and the car looked like it was
working well.”Alan’s overall conclusion is that
the team could be poised to spring a surprise this
weekend. “Robert was quickest this morning and,
although we don’t know the fuel loads of the
others, we had no major complaints with the car. We
said at the beginning of the week that the goal was
to get both cars into Q3 and I still think that’s
a realistic target.”So we’re now looking forward
to a solid final practice session and a strong
performance in qualifying which gets underway later
than usual at 17:00 tomorrow afternoon. And now the
photos…
